FOR EVER GRATEFUL FOR TERRY’S INFLUENCE

In the early 70s Terry was there for me when I was a shy (not very confident) young man and got me a job in the engineering company he worked for in Romford as a trainee and later another engineering company in Brentford.  He gave me a lot of guidance and support and encouraged me to learn from my mistakes and not give up and to think for myself and to read books like the classics Moby Dick and Treasure Ireland.
He was a big character with a great sense of humour and a practical joker.  I remember when working with him in Brentford he bought a classical guitar and tutor book from the local music shop and encouraged me to buy them as well.  One day he said he was going to buy a metronome from the shop and after asking him what it was used for, I said I would buy one also. We bought them during our lunch break and I put my metronome that comes in a pyramid shaped box in the side cupboard next to where I was working.  When I got home from work that day, I decided to take the metronome out of the bag it was in but when I opened the box it wasn’t there, only lumps of metal!
When working for this company Terry was a contract worker but I was paid hourly.  Which meant I had to start work at 9pm but he could start and finish at different times. Sometimes Terry would give me a lift home from to work in his camper van.  One day he said I will give you a lift to work on Monday if you come around to my house.  When I got to his house on that Monday, about 8am, I knocked on the door but he was still asleep in bed.  It took me ages to wake him up but eventually he got up and apologised for over sleeping and then we were on our way to work in his camper van.  When we eventually got onto the A127 from Basildon (about 9:10am) he said the van is low on petrol so we pulled into a petrol station.  As we pulled into the station Terry said guess who just passed us in their car?  I said who and he replied, the firm’s manager.
When we got to work, I clocked in and went to my machine and Terry to his. After a while I looked over to where he was working and I saw the manager talking to him.  Wondering what the manager had said to him and thinking we are both in trouble for being late, I went over after the manager had gone and asked him what the manager had said to him.   He said the manager told him he was fed up with seeing him on his way to work.  Terry replied, well if you don’t want to see me on your way to work, what you could do is travel to work earlier in the morning, say about 7 am and then you won’t see me!
